Image Courtesy of Takween ICD<\/small><br \/>\n<\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>Among the seven<a href=\"https:\/\/www.archdaily.com\/1033690\/aga-khan-award-for-architecture-announces-2025-winners\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> winners of this year&#8217;s 16th Aga Khan Award for Architecture<\/a> was the<strong> <\/strong>Revitalisation of Historic Esna in southern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archdaily.com\/country\/egypt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Egypt<\/a>. Led by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archdaily.com\/tag\/cairo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cairo<\/a>-based firm Takween, the project was far more than a simple restoration. It was a comprehensive renewal effort that combined deep community engagement with the preservation of both tangible and intangible <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archdaily.com\/tag\/heritage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">heritage<\/a>. By creating thousands of jobs and restoring the historic center, the initiative offered a powerful alternative to demolition.
